How I Created a “This or That” Game for Grandparents & Teens Using Canva

BOOKS, GAMES & CREATIVITY TIPS

Have you ever looked at a template and thought, “I like this…but I want to make it MY way?”

That’s exactly what I did!

I created a fun “This or That” conversation starter game for grandparents and teens designed to make it easier to get those conversations going.

Because sometimes asking a teenager, “How was your day?” gets you:

“Fine.”

“How was school?”

“Good.”

😂

And that's it!

But what if instead of asking another traditional question, you asked:

Would you rather have pizza or tacos?
Would you rather watch a movie or play a game?
Would you rather travel to the beach or the mountains?

Now you have something to talk about!

🎯 Why I Created This Game

I believe family time doesn't always have to be complicated.

Sometimes all we need is a simple question that opens the door to a meaningful conversation.

My Grandparents With Teens Conversation Starters – This or That Game was created to help grandparents and teens:

  • Have more meaningful conversations
  • Discover each other's likes and dislikes
  • Laugh and have fun together
  • Spend intentional time together
  • Get beyond those one-word answers
  • Create memories through simple games

And here's the fun part…

💻 I Started With a Template!

For this project, I didn't start with a blank page.

I started with an existing template and asked myself:

“How can I make this look and feel like ME?”

That's one of my favorite things about creating with Canva.

You don't always have to reinvent the wheel.

You can start with a template and customize it to fit your:

✨ Brand colors
✨ Fonts
✨ Personality
✨ Audience
✨ Logo
✨ Photos
✨ Call to action

For my project, I incorporated my own branding, colors, imagery and messaging to transform the original template into a resource specifically designed for grandparents and teens.

🎨 Your Template Doesn't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's

One of the biggest mistakes I see new creators make is thinking they have to create everything from scratch.

You don't!

A template can simply be your starting point.

Think of it like a recipe.

The template gives you the basic ingredients and structure.

Then YOU add your own flavor!

That's exactly what I did with this conversation starter game.

👵🏾👧🏾 Why Grandparents and Teens?

Our teens are growing up in a world filled with technology, social media, school pressures and busy schedules.

Grandparents can play an important role in creating spaces where teens feel:

Seen. Heard. Loved. Valued.

And sometimes the best way to open that door is through something FUN.

That's why I love the idea of combining conversation + games + family time.

You don't have to sit across from a teenager and say: “We need to have a serious conversation.”

😳

Instead, you can say:

“Okay…This or That! Which one are you choosing?”

And let the conversation happen naturally.

I'm taking you behind the scenes to show you how I took an existing template and customized it to create my own Grandparents With Teens This or That Conversation Starter Game.

I'll show you some of the design decisions I made, including how I changed the look, colors and content to make the game fit my audience and my message.

If you're a beginner Canva creator, author, coach, ministry leader, grandparent or someone who creates resources for families, I hope this inspires you to look at templates differently.

Don't just use the template. Make it yours!

💡 Your Turn!

Think about a problem your audience has.

Then ask yourself:

“Could I turn a simple template into a resource that helps solve that problem?”

Maybe it's:

  • A conversation starter
  • A checklist
  • A prayer card
  • A game
  • A journal
  • A worksheet
  • An activity
  • A printable
  • A family challenge

You might already have the idea.

You just need to turn that problem into purpose.

And who knows?

Your next simple Canva creation might become someone's favorite family activity!
